Home > Adhesive Coating > How Does The Adhesive Coating Machine Work?

adhesive coating machineIn their raw forms, most materials that we work with are not naturally adhesive. However, they may need adhesive properties for a wide variety of reasons. Therefore, we make products adhesive through the coating process, typically executed with an adhesive coating machine. The machine will apply an adhesive layer to a material, with the material ultimately retaining its standard characteristics, with the added benefit of being adhesive.

We execute adhesive coating amongst many other types of coating techniques, and the process serves several different industries. Consumer products and construction materials benefit from adhesive coating, as does the automotive industry. While there are standard techniques for adhesive coating, an adhesive coating machine is not utilized in a singular manner. Different approaches and processes are utilized to increase the range of adhesive coatings, using different materials and techniques.

Contract Manufacturing

This range is one reason why many business owners choose to work with contract manufacturers, rather than coating materials individually. A contract manufacturer like Conversion Technologies International can accumulate experience with different adhesive coating techniques and can keep multiple machines. Furthermore, a contract manufacturer has the capacity to maintain more than one adhesive coating machine. This means that they can more easily experiment, attempting different approaches and creating pilot runs while not diverging from your planned timeline.

Adhesive coating machines can be difficult to use and may require adaptations as you work through the process. With that being said, it’s important that you know the type of machine that you need, as well as where you can get adhesive coating services outside of individual machine ownership. It’s not strictly necessary for you to handle your adhesive coating processes in house.

What is an Adhesive Sheet Coating Machine?

There is not only one adhesive coating process. For example, you could consider sheeting coating machines, which essentially apply a thin layer of glue. We apply the adhesive coating onto foam sheets, chipboards, and other materials. A reservoir holds the glue and the roller portion of the machine dips into that reservoir. Once covered in glue, the roll applies adhesive coating to the part in question from bottom to top.

Due to the formation of the tank roll, the processor is able to level out the thickness of the glue. The layer of glue can be as thin as a sheet of paper, and as thick as five inches. Additionally, the length of the coating roll can range from nine inches to 50 inches.

Typically, the glue used is water based, though that in itself leaves your options open. The most common type of glue used in this industrial process is latex glue. In particular, we can apply U.V. coatings through this type of adhesive coating machine. This type of machine is usually made of stainless steel and is easily cleaned with water. Therefore, it’s quite common for manufacturers to utilize this machine. However, this is not the only approach you can take when making adhesive coatings.

What is a Hot Melt Adhesive Coating Machine?

The interesting quality of a hot melt adhesive coating machine is that it coats without the use of water or solvents. The machine is also referred to as a slot die coating machine. Typically, we use water or solvents to decrease the viscosity of adhesives and make their application easier. The problem with this approach is that we heat adhesives in the process and they are in turn made very thin.

With a hot melt adhesive coating machine, we melt the adhesive beforehand. The slot dies allow the machine to apply adhesives evenly and accurately, without wasting time. Not only does this allow you to skip the cleanup required when we use excessive adhesive; it also decreases waste. Standard adhesive coating techniques often leave you with leftover liquid coating solution. Additionally, this means that there is less risk of wrinkling or curling.

Furthermore, when you apply adhesive coating without water-based or solution-based adhesives, you don’t need a separate drying component. When we utilize a hot melting adhesive coating machine, the adhesive coating will natural firm as it cools. At the same time, it will regain its viscosity. The process is automatic and doesn’t require an additional product. Once again, this increases the efficiency of the process, and cuts down on the amount of materials necessary.

Because there is not an excessive amount of adhesive used, there is no need for a reservoir in a hot melt adhesive coating machine. Therefore, the overall machine itself is smaller. It also uses less energy, which makes it more cost efficient and even more environmentally friendly. This is why many business owners prefer the holt melt adhesive coating technique. But that doesn’t mean they can use it easily themselves.

Working with CTI

Often, business owners find it easier to work with CTI, as opposed to buying their own hot melt adhesive coating machines.
